Studying the colonial period can be rather dry.  My students needed a challenge to learn about various colonies through means other than their textbook and videos.  I designed this assignment so that students could transform their knowledge of one of the 13 Colonies into a mock newspaper.

Students worked in teams, using a variety of research materials and methods, including primary sources and literature to create their newspapers. Each team member had a different role (Editor in chief, news reporters, feature reporter, society writer, advertising copy writer, and illustrator/graphic designer.)  This variety of roles allowed students to work according to their own individual strengths (multiple intelligences and learning styles) and interests. In addition, students had to cooperate to create the finished product.
