12/29/04:: Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking reminds me of Laurell K. Hamilton's first Anita Blake
novel --sexy, smart, and suspenseful. Now that Anita's sleeping with just about anything that moves (whether or not it has
a pulse or turns furry), Hamilton's writing has lost that mavelous tension; it's just pretty porn. Luckily, Harrison still
appreciates the art of the tease. I'm looking forward to her next offering in the world of witch Rachel Morgan.
7/9/03: Victoriana noir week courtesy of Sarah Water's Fingersmith. If you have not read this book,
but love the late nineteenth-century Britain of the Fanged Foursome, stop browsing my site and head to Amazon.com.
6/13/03: Currently reading L.A. Banks' Minion: A Vampire Huntress Legend. I love the characters and the weapons are
cool, but Banks' timing of both minor and crucial revelations seems off. She also suffers from what I call the MacMillian
disease --excessive description of clothing and material possessions.
By Chapter 3, I managed to put aside my annoyance with the quirks
and start enjoying the tale, but I don't know if I'll pick up the next installment. However, this is her first novel
and it's about time that a Sister was a Slayer.
6/05/03: I'm not sure whether I hate Blood and Fog (Nancy Holder's tale of
Buffy and Spike's century-apart battles with Jack the Ripper--billed by my bookseller as the last official Buffy novel.) or
am just disappointed. I am fairly obsessed with JtR and confess to having seen "From Hell" 13 times (ok, so Johnny Depp's
presence has something to do with 11 of those times, but still!!!). However, I didn't find Holder's Jack to be that terrifying.
Gross yes. Tenacious even. But not scary enough to have me starting at shadows. My other annoyance with the book was that
it seemed to try to tie up too many S7 storylines.
5/31/03: I decided it was time to lighten my bank account and went on a little spree at the mall. I fell in love with the winy
colors and raw textures of a designer named Kate Hill. After dropping near a grand on a new fall wardrobe, I decided to look
ole Kate up on the 'Net. She doesn't Google very well. The first hundred or so hits were for a writer named Kate Hill, who
incidently writes romance novels about vampires.
I haven't shelled out the $20 for her latest, The Immaculate,
yet, But I am intrigued.
4/11/03: Spring Break starts today. I have a ton
of coursework towards my second Masters to finish. However, I am looking forward to some extended pleasure reading --hopefully
in a nice steamy bath with scented candles and liberal amounts of Cuarenta Y Tres.
Speaking of pleasure reading, I am on the third book of the Wraeththu series and slogging my
way through the last (thank God!) part of The Lost Slayer so that I can claim my reward from Spiketothemax.
4/2/03: Just noticed my DH is reading The Lost Slayer by Christopher Golden. Hope he gets further
through it than I did the first two attempts. I loved Golden's Pretty Maids All in a Row, but haven't been able to
bring myself to finish Part III of The Lost Slayer.
Read this book with caution if you despise major character death!
3/31/03: I'm reading Charles de Lint's The
Onion Girl. I'm about 3/4 of the way through (and pretty disappointed that I haven't woken up in the Dreamlands yet!)
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who believes in magick or faerie (or like me, just wishes that they did).
3/15/03:
I just finished Laurell K. Hamilton's entire "Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter" series and both "Meredith Gentry books". (Hamilton
was my mid-winter obsession.) Loved the sex, but reaffirmed my beliefs that a) Joss is the master and b) I should never move
to the Midwest.
